Getting Started With Your First Emails

You’ve just started out as a part-time Email List Manager.

And let’s say you’ve already vetted a prospective client according to the criteria I gave you in "5 Make or Break Questions Nobody's Asking" and they’ve checked all the “right answer” boxes.

And now you’ve landed your first client.

Congratulations!

Great! What comes next?

The first thing you want to do is find an Email Service Provider (ESP) that you will use to send their emails.

“Can’t I just use their email account and send out “personal emails,” you ask.

I suppose so, but you’re going to run into big problems very quickly.

Better to just get started off on the right foot with the right ESP. You’ll thank yourself very quickly.

In my blog post, How to Choose Which Email Provider is Right for You? I give you simple tips for choosing the right ESP for your new part-time business.

In this article, I’m going to walk you through how to set up your account using Klaviyo.

Full disclosure: I am a Klaviyo Partner. And I became a partner because I really like their system.

Let’s say your client has a small list of email addresses (about 100 of them). And now they want you to start sending emails to them.

Here’s why I like to recommend Klaviyo: you can start using it for free.

Keep reading and I’ll teach you how easy it is to get started sending your first batch of emails for your clients.

Get Your Free Account With Klaviyo

Click this link, and then fill in the information in the sign-up form on Klaviyo.

For “Company name,” you want to put in the name of your client’s company name.

For “Company website,” you want to put in the URL of your client’s web site.

When asked “How will you be using Klaviyo?” you want to select “For my client’s business,” because you’re acting as an agency on behalf of your client.

Finish the information and then click the [Create Account] button.

Voila! It’s that easy!

Configure Your Client's Sending Domain

Now that you’ve created your free Klaviyo account, the first thing you need to do is configure the sending domain that you’ll be using for your client.

“Sending domain” is the more technical term for “from email address” that your subscribers will see when they read your emails.

You can’t send any emails until you do this step first.

And in order for you to complete this step, you’ll need to ask your client if they can give you access to their account on the registrar that hosts their website’s domain. Not their website – but their website’s domain.

For example, I use systeme.io to host this blog article and all my online courses. But the domain registrar of my site’s URL is hosted with GoDaddy.com. So, I’ll log in to my GoDaddy.com account in order to create the proper records.

The reason why you’ll need access to your client's domain registrar account is because you’ll be creating a few records that tell mailbox providers (like Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, etc.) that your Klaviyo account has permission to send emails on your client’s behalf.

You own the Klaviyo account, yes. And Klaviyo is the software that’s creating and sending the emails you tell it to.

Watch the video below to see how easy it is to configure your sending domain.

Why Is This Step So Important?

This step is important because you won’t be able to send emails from Klaviyo until you do.

But there’s a reason for that requirement.

As I said above, every mailbox provider wants to make sure that you, by way of your ESP, have your client’s permission to send emails on their behalf.

Read my blog post, "Get This Done ASAP if You Still Want to Make Money Online". In this article, I explain what these types of records do and why they’re important.

You're Ready to Grow!

Well done!

You've completed your first major hurdle.

Now you're ready to start uploading the list of email addresses and create your first email.
