Wages are stuck in neutral, but prices aren’t. In just the past 5 years, a simple pound of butter now costs 150% more than it used to. And gas prices? Puh-leeze!
Has your salary done that in the past 5 years?
I’m talking to more and more people who’ve come to the conclusion they need a side hustle to break free from living paycheck to paycheck.
You’ve probably never heard of this type of a role before. And yet – email list managers have been around for over 2 decades! And do you know why? It’s because they get results year after year.
You’ll find email list managers either working at companies or running their own businesses.
They come from all different backgrounds – much like yours!
Short answer: An email list manager is a Rainmaker. Email list managers have been trained to use email marketing to make money.
Do they have Marketing degrees?
Some do; most don’t.
An email list manager is someone who:
Not so bad, eh?
There were almost 400 billion emails sent worldwide last year! So obviously, email is still highly used to communicate and build relationships.
When we think of email, we typically think of retailers. But who also uses email to communicate with their customers?
Question: What do they all have in common?
Answer: They all need email to grow their influence and businesses. But that’s not their focus of attention. That’s why they’d much rather have YOU manage their email lists so they can focus on their core business.
Surprisingly, very little. Whether you have a college degree or never finished high school. It doesn’t matter. All you need is a little bit of training, and you’ve leap frogged over everyone else.
Basically, you need three things:
1. A computer
2. Access to the internet
3. A burning desire to succeed
To my first point, you don’t need a $5000 computer. You don’t even need a $1000 one. You can even use a simple Chromebook!
And since you’re reading this article, you’re two-thirds of the way there!
Email list managers are hired to do two things: (1) write electrifying emails, and (2) get them delivered to the inbox.
Now how hard is that?
Actually – not so easy to do for someone who isn’t trained.
There’s a lot of people out there who think they know email but don’t.
Need proof? Just look at all the junk in your email inbox. Can you believe it?? People actually got PAID to create and send that junk.
YOU CAN DO BETTER! Why? Because I’ll train you to do better!
First off, you need to learn the Art of Persuasion.
You need to know basic email copywriting.
You need to know how to segment an audience based on any combination of criteria like how old they are, where they live, what interests they’ve self-identified as having, whether they’ve responded to any of your earlier emails, what products they’ve purchased, and what pages on a web site they’ve previously viewed.
Then you’re going to need to understand what the numbers mean. No, you don’t need a PhD in Applied Mathematics. You just need to know the situations in which 10% is better than 1%, and when 1% is better than 10%.
Don’t panic. I’ll teach you how. I’ve been a professional email marketer for over 18 years. I’ve taught hundreds of people new to email list management who have gone on to be very successful.
While you don’t need a formal degree to become an email list manager, you do need training. There’s lots of online courses (including the Sell With Email Online Academy) and other resources that teach you the fundamentals of email list management.

You’re going to then build a portfolio of your work. Start by offering your services to family, friends, and organizations that you personally know.
Is there a local mom-and-pop business in your neighborhood and you’re noticing that they’re collecting email addresses? I’ll becha even though they’re capturing them, they don’t have time to send to them. Offer your services to them.
Is there someone you know who has a blog with lots of followers? Offer to be the one to manage the email communications with the followers.
Is there a non-profit you volunteer for, or one in your local area that you feel passionate about?
Most of the time, the one doing their email campaigns is wearing 10 other different hats. You might find one who’d be happy to have you take over so they can focus on what they really want to do.
Same for churches. Do you have a local church you attend?
Do you have a child going to school? Offer to take over their parent newsletters.
Did you stay at a bed and breakfast recently and you really liked the place? Did you see if they’re capturing email addresses on their web site or at their guest registrar? Give them a call and let them know all the skills that you have.
Are you currently seeing a nutritionist or maybe know someone who is? Give ‘em a call!
Know of any realtors? They don’t get paid to write emails. They get paid when they show houses. But they need emails to stay in touch with their clients for repeat business. I’m sure with as many realtors existing in your town, you’ll find more than a few who’d be more than happy to have you manage their email lists.
So, the key thing is don’t wait for people to come to you. You gotta go to the people.
I also highly recommend that you add yourself to as many Facebook Groups as you can keep track of.
Read the posts and the comments to the posts.
Whatever niche you want to approach with your email list management services, join those groups to find out what their pain points are.
Obviously, every Facebook Group has rules that you have to abide by, so you want to be careful about your own posts in the Group.
Making shameless sales pitches to the Group will get you expelled from that Group.
But as an expert email list manager, you’ll be able to provide helpful information to the Group members, thereby building your street cred.
