3 Reasons Why Email is (Still) the Best Way to Sell Your Products

When you're a new entrepreneur starting out your business, you suddenly find yourself responsible for everything. If you have a marketing background, great. But most entrepreneurs don't. Most likely, you've based your business of your own field of expertise and now you're having to learn on your own how to market your business. Probably, you've never considered email. Or maybe you have but dismissed it because you think that only spammers use email. Unless you're a professional marketer, you'd never know that email is the best way to market your business worldwide.

It can be daunting starting out your business from scratch on a shoestring budget. No doubt you've already done a web search on the keywords, "best ways to market your business." Search results can give you the impression that advertising on social media is the best way to market your business. That's a myth; and for some reason it keeps going round and round the internet, and just won't go away. Yes -- advertising your business on social media is an important part of your marketing mix. I advertise too. But to advertise on social media, you need to spent money. A. Lot. Of. Money. Which is a problem when you're just starting out, and needing to stretch your limited funds.

To paraphrase Samuel Clemens, "the report of email's death is an exaggeration." Indeed email is very much alive and will be for a long time. Here's 3 reasons why you need to start using email to market your business.

Reason #1: Email is the Most Successful

As the main graphic above shows, email generates MORE THAN TWICE the number of sales than does social media. And it's not just in the US -- it's worldwide.

Since more sales are generated from email than from social media, then maybe -- just maybe -- businesses know something about email that you haven't yet considered. Maybe it's time to put aside your fears of using email and learn how easily you can use email to grow sales for your business.

Which brings me to my second point why email is the best way to market your business ...

Reason #2: Email is the Most Cost-Effective

If you're already advertising on Facebook, how much are you spending every month? I was listening to a webinar the other day from a well-respected social media marketer. She said that at a minimium you should be spending between $500 to $1000 a month for at least 3-5 months.

How much does it cost to send emails? How about free? When you're first starting out, you're got a small list of contacts to send to. You have an embarrassment of riches from whom to choose. There's lots of excellent email service providers that let you them for free like Mailchimp, Campaign Monitor, Klaviyo, and SendGrid.

As a new business owner, not only are you the Chief Marketing Officer, you're now also the Chief Financial Officer. You now have to be responsible to understand terms like gross profit, net profit and return on investment. Let's say I make $1000 in sales this month from Social Media and $500 in sales from email. Should I be doing the Snoopy happy dance for social media? Not if it cost me $1100 in Facebook ad spend. The $500 in sales from email is looking a lot better -- especially when I'm using a free email account to send to my prospects.

Reason #3: Email Offers the Most Freedom from Biased Censure

If your business just sells t-shirts of happy puppies and kittens, then this third reason why email is the best way to market your business probably doesn't pertain to you. Nevertheless, you should be concerned because of what is becoming a disturbing trend by owners of social media networks -- particularly Facebook. In the past few years, we're starting to see more evidence of a biased, capricious and contradictory definition of what is "acceptable" on social media. The censuring of Facebook posts and advertising isn't just confined to politics. I was at a conference last year where I met a number of individuals who stopped advertising on Facebook because their posts and ads were permanently blocked. Right-wing extremists? Hardly. These were professional health care providers whose only crime is to present organic, nutritional protocols that reduce the dependency on prescription medication for high-risk individuals.

What makes email so great is that you own your message and you own your audience. There are no self-proclaimed "fact-checkers" censuring your emails. With email, your message is 100% pure. You get to tell your story the way you want to.

The only emails you send should be to those who have given you their consent. They want to hear from you. With email, you're not at the mercy of someone who personally disagrees with you and blocks your message. Only email gives you the direct connection to those who care about what you have to say.

Conclusion:

To recap, email is still the best way to sell your products online. Here's the 3 Top Reasons Why:

  • Email is the most successful at driving sales
  • Email is the most cost-effective
  • Email offers the most freedom from biased censure

If you were skeptical before, the fact that you've made it to the end of this article is an encouraging indicator that you're thinking that email might be right for your business.
